Introduction to smells
Introduction to K9 Nose Work® was developed in the United States by a group of detection dog handlers. While they were assessing shelter dogs for a career in Nose Work® they observed how much the dogs lives had been enriched for those who didn’t make the cut as detection dogs. Through this enrichment the sport and training methods for our pet dogs grew. The way we train Nose Work® is progressive; using modern evidence based training techniques we are able to shape the dog to hunt and enjoy the hunt.
If you are experiencing behavioural issues I encourage you to explore our method to train Nose Work®. If you have already been referred by your chosen Veterinary Behaviouralist we look forward to helping you get the most out of the experience and work to help you build this for your dog.
Introduction to K9 Nose Work
K9 Nose Work is an exciting and rewarding activity that taps into a dog’s natural ability to detect scents. Developed by the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW), this sport is inspired by professional detection dog training and is designed to be accessible to dogs of all breeds, ages, and abilities. Unlike obedience-based activities, Nose Work allows dogs to take the lead, engaging their instincts in a way that builds confidence, focus, and problem-solving skills.
The training starts with foundational games that teach dogs to search for a “primary” in a structured and fun manner. As they progress, they learn to locate hidden scent sources in various environments, from boxes to vehicles and even outdoor spaces. Beyond enrichment, K9 Nose Work is a powerful tool for behaviour modification, providing anxious, reactive, or fearful dogs with a safe, independent activity that fosters resilience, trust, and a strong bond with their handlers.
